RESEARCH AREAS

Dynamic Task Scheduling Purpose: Design the capability to generate a schedule of knowledge work tasks that can be distributed & shared by multiple knowledge workers. This shared schedule will include representation of resources with availabilities, consumptions, & consumption interpolation; schedule display & manipulation via a Gantt chart with coordinated resource availability/consumption display; sequencing, dependent duration activities, & other tools for aggregation of scheduling actions; progress reporting and rescheduling & other resourcing utilities.

Knowledge Worker Information Management (KWIM) Purpose: Determine methods to simplify access to knowledge worker information, including information about the task structure within KWS, attached documents, automated procedures (Do Its), external information sources, process knowledge, etc. The product will provide a capability to access required knowledge & information sources to support the knowledge work processes in the KWS system.

Intelligent Agent Definition Purpose: Develop capability to design rule-based intelligent agents that can be fully integrated within a performance support environment (PSE) & reusable across a variety of business disciplines. A PSE for knowledge workers must include this facility to associate automated agents with procedural activities. [In general, an agent is something or someone authorized to act in place of another to produce an effect. In computer terms, it follows that an agent is programmable & capable of acting automatically in place of a knowledge worker with the knowledge worker's authority.]

Performance Support Environment Effectiveness Purpose: Develop a set of performance metrics that can measure the effect of a performance support environment within a knowledge work setting. Three distinct areas of PSE effectiveness will be included: Group Task Management, Institutional Knowledge & Intelligent Agents.

Computer-Supported Collaborative Work for KWS Purpose: Integrate group task management & workgroup coordination within the KWS performance support environment. Design the capability to intelligently route tasks & documents, provide group authoring, support group definition of procedural information, share multimedia information, & provide intuitive storage of the information generated, used, & shared by workgroups.
